About Mwala Ventures
Mwala Ventures is a diversified South African ventures group with interests across consulting and advisory, technology and innovation, property, and human capital. We work with corporates, government entities, and growing businesses that need clear strategy paired with disciplined execution.
Our mission is to help ambitious organizations become what they are truly capable of. We want to work alongside leaders who are building something that matters, and help them turn that ambition into something real, something enduring, something built to outlast all of us. We believe great organizations are built the same way great things have always been built: on solid ground, with patience, and with people who care enough to get it right. Our ambition is to be the firm that serious leaders cannot imagine building without, known not for the work we talk about but for the quiet weight of what we leave behind.
Across every division we operate on one principle: substance over spectacle. We do not chase trends. We do not take on work we cannot deliver at the highest standard. We study the problem, design the solution, and execute with precision.
The Role
We are hiring our first Marketing and Communications Manager. This is a foundational hire.
You will own how Mwala Ventures shows up to clients, partners, government entities, prospective hires, and the broader South African business community. Four divisions, one magazine, one journal, one graduate pathway. All of it needs a voice that is consistent, considered, and recognisable.
This is not a strategy-only role. It is a hands-on role for someone who can think clearly, write sharply, and ship reliably. You will report into leadership, sit close to every division, and translate what is actually happening inside the business into communication that is useful to the people it reaches.
If the work is not on-brand, not accurate, or not well-written, it does not go out. You are the person who catches that before it does.
What You Will Actually Do
- Own the marketing and communications function across the Mwala Ventures group and every division.
- Develop and run a communications strategy tied to real business objectives across consulting, technology, property, human capital, and the Graduate Programme.
- Manage the Mwala Ventures LinkedIn presence as the primary channel. This is a professional services business working with corporates and government, and LinkedIn is where our audience is.
- Build and maintain a monthly content calendar that covers every division, every article drop, every campaign, and every moment worth marking.
- Publish and promote articles through Mwala Magazine (our email newsletter) and Insights (our journal). Coordinate with authors inside and outside the business, edit where needed, and amplify each piece through the right channels.
- Update and maintain the website through our CMS. Add new Insights articles, update Careers listings, publish new service pages, refresh imagery, and make sure nothing on the site is stale or out of date. You will be trained on the CMS. You do not need to code.
- Draft and schedule content across LinkedIn, the website, newsletters, and campaign announcements.
- Write captions, headlines, short-form copy, and long-form copy that reflect the Mwala tone: precise, confident, plain-spoken, no filler.
- Ensure every external-facing asset, including decks, one-pagers, proposals, social graphics, and email templates, is on-brand and consistent across divisions.
- Produce basic visual assets in Canva or similar when dedicated design support is unavailable. Brief and review assets with the design function when required.
- Support business development and campaign launches with sharp, well-timed communication. When we win a tender, launch a new offer, or publish a major piece of work, the market should know and the messaging should be right.
- Conduct market research into the South African business landscape, our client sectors, and the competitive environment. Feed those insights back into how we communicate and what we write about.
- Track performance across channels using analytics tools, report on what worked and what did not, and use that to sharpen the next round of work.
- Flag opportunities worth acting on: industry news, conversations we should be part of, procurement moments, and campaign timing that matters.
This Role Is For You If
- You write exceptionally well across formats. Social, long-form, email, proposal copy, business communication. Tone is something you think about, and editing is something you take seriously.
- You have 1 to 2 years of hands-on marketing experience. Internships count if you were genuinely doing the work.
- You are highly organised and self-directed. Managing four divisions and a graduate pathway means managing several sets of content needs at once, and you can do that without losing track.
- You care about detail. You proofread. You notice when a date is wrong, a logo is off, a headline is weak, or a sentence is not doing what it should. You do not send things out half-finished.
- You understand LinkedIn as a professional services channel, not just a social network.
- You are commercially aware enough to understand that marketing exists to support revenue, reputation, and business development, not just to produce content.
- You can use a CMS to publish and update website content, and you are comfortable learning new tools quickly. If you have not used one before, you can show us you can pick one up.
- You can produce clean, on-brand visual assets in Canva or similar without waiting on a designer for every small thing.
- You understand the South African business landscape well enough to write about it intelligently. Corporate procurement, government tenders, the SME space, professional services. You do not need to be an expert, but you should be able to hold a conversation with a corporate client and write copy that a procurement lead would take seriously.
- You are based in South Africa with a reliable internet connection.
- You are actively invested in your own learning. We do not care where you went to university or whether you went at all. We care that you can show us you take learning seriously. Online courses, certifications, seminars, workshops, books you have worked through, newsletters you actually read. Marketing changes fast, especially with AI in the mix, and we want someone who keeps up without being told to.
This Role Is Not For You If
- You want a strategy-only role where someone else does the execution. You will be writing, publishing, scheduling, and updating things yourself.
- You are used to marketing consumer brands and find professional services boring. Our audience is corporate, government, and serious SMEs. The work needs to reflect that.
- You think good marketing means clever tricks, viral stunts, or performative content. We do not chase trends, and we do not take on work we cannot deliver at the highest standard.
- You need constant direction and sign-off. You will have leadership visibility and support, but you are expected to run the function, not wait for instructions.
- You write in filler. If your instinct is to add adjectives, hedges, and softeners to fill out a paragraph, the editing burden here will not work for you.
- You cannot keep multiple workstreams organised at once. Four divisions means there is always something in motion.
- You are uncomfortable with a CMS, basic analytics tools, or producing a decent visual in Canva. These are the baseline, not the stretch.
Nice to Have
- Experience with an email marketing platform such as Mailchimp, HubSpot, Brevo, or similar.
- Familiarity with AI tools in a marketing context. This matters because Technology and Innovation is one of our divisions, and using AI well is part of how we work.
- Basic understanding of SEO as it applies to article and journal management.
- Exposure to B2B marketing, professional services, training businesses, recruitment, or property.
- Experience writing for a corporate or government audience.
What We Offer
- Impact. Build the marketing and communications function from the ground up across a multi-division ventures group.
- Growth. A clear path to leading communications across the full Mwala Ventures portfolio as it scales.
- Autonomy. Full ownership of brand, content, and channel decisions, with leadership support where you need it.
- Exposure. Direct line of sight into consulting engagements, AI adoption, property investment, government procurement, and multi-sector business building.
